Workplace violence against women is increasingly acknowledged as a serious issue that deserves attention and resources to combat it. Fair Wear Foundation has identified some of the most important risks that affect women, and particularly women garment workers, and that can lead to workplace violence.

Home life

Women still bear the majority of household chores, like cooking, cleaning and caring for children.

Travel

Travelling to and from work, very early or very late in the day, is often unsafe.

Excessive overtime

Women in factories often work more than 8 hours per day to complement their low pay.

Discrimination

Women often face discrimination in terms of wages, training, and promotion.

Low pay

Women often work the lowest-paid jobs in garment factories.

Maternity issues

The lack of paid maternity leave, and work until late in the pregnancy, lead to health risks.

Poor hygiene

Women experience health problems because of few and dirty toilets, or lack of water in factories.

Harassment

Women often experience violence and (sexual) harassment on the workfloor.
